Diel's daydreams

AI is making people too lazy

AI makes people lazy.

Everybody is lazy sometimes, this is not a problem. The problem is when even the minuscule, personal, and superfluous tasks are done with AI.

I don't think the use of AI is right (especially as an artist), but I understand why somebody would use it to speed up a task they see as annoying or bothersome. What I cannot understand is why someone would use AI to write a comment, especially in a fan fiction. Not even to defraud someone, but simply to look smart, because they're too lazy to use their own words, too lazy to think by themselves.

Some days ago I was reading a fanfic and saw somebody who thought it was a good idea to put a fan work through AI just so they could leave a long and “insightful” comment. The author was very unhappy, rightfully, and called them out. You would think they would delete their comment and apologize, but they doubled down. Each person to comment about how wrong they were would receive a three paragraph long ChatGPT generated response about how they didn't use AI and are just really passionate about reviewing.

At first I didn’t notice anything weird other than the length. But at a closer look I could see how hollow the text was, filled with “—” and words put there just to “fill sausage” not getting anywhere, and a structure like an essay, with thanks in the end. Looking closely, it was super weird.

I really want to know why they generated a comment. As a fanfic writer, I would rather receive no comments than have my hard work put through AI for someone's “opinions”, a simple "<3" or a "very good" would suffice. Feedback and encouragement is very important to authors to keep writing, especially in fan works, but having my hard work put through ChatGPT would make me stop sharing my writing and delete all my creations in frustration. I hope it never happens to me.

I really hope my work never come across a person so lazy they surrender their ability to form a opinion by themselves.

Thanks for reading! You can leave a comment here
